China Remains the Primary Source Economy for Counterfeit Activity in FY2016

A record number of IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) violations were reported by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in FY2016. Among the goods seized were 386 shipments of semiconductor devices affixed with 52 unique counterfeited OCM (Original Component Manufacturer) trademarks.

Not surprising, mainland China remained the primary source economy for counterfeit and pirated goods seized, accounting for $616 million or 45 percent of the total estimated MSRP value of all IPR seizures. Hong Kong again was the second largest source of IPR infringing shipments, accounting for nearly $600 million or 43 percent of the total MSRP value of all IPR seizures.
