In November 2007, the G-19 Counterfeit Electronic Components Committee was chartered by SAE Aerospace to develop the first industry standard to specifically address the threat of counterfeit electronic components in the aeronautic, space, defense, civil and commercial electronic supply chains. The committee was tasked with documenting recognized best practices in component management, supplier management, procurement, inspection, test/evaluation methods and response strategies when suspect or confirmed counterfeit components are detected.

SAE AS5553 Counterfeit Electronic Parts; Avoidance, Detection, Mitigation, and Disposition was released on April 2, 2009 and just four months later was swiftly adopted by the United States Department of Defense.  Since that time, the document, along with companion documents and standards ARP6178, AS6174A, AS6081, AS6496, AIR6273 (work in progress), AS6171 (work in progress), have altered nearly every aspect of how electronic components are purchased, sold and integrated.

On September, 12, 2016, the second revision, AS5553B Counterfeit Electrical, Electronic, and Electromechanical (EEE) Parts; Avoidance, Detection, Mitigation, and Disposition was released along with a new companion document, ARP6328 Guideline for Development of Counterfeit Electronic Parts; Avoidance, Detection, Mitigation, and Disposition Systems.

Government, industry, and all tiers of the supply chain from independent distributors to prime contractors have united, collaborated and continue to work tirelessly to produce these documents.  ERAI applauds the efforts of the past and present committee leaders and SAE Aerospace for responding to government and industry’s need for a systematic approach to counterfeit identification and avoidance.
